I grew up in North Minneapolis and received a Bachelors Degree in Chemistry with a French minor from Hamline University, where I was a certified peer tutor in math, chemistry, and French. After graduation, I started a career in quality control for a locally-based pharmaceutical company. As a chemist, I really enjoyed solving complex problems and the detail-oriented work, but I missed the ability to engage meaningfully with others and make a visible impact in their lives. In 2013, as a way to interweave the rational with the relational, I made the decision to become a financial planner.
While working full-time, I studied evenings and weekends for the Certificate in Financial Planning at University of St Thomas to become a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professional. I made strong connections with other professionals in finance while learning to help people set and manage their financial goals across the six areas of financial planning (Cash Flow & Budgeting, Savings & Investments, Insurance & Employee Benefits, Tax Planning, Retirement, and Estate Planning). After 3 years of employment with a large insurance and investment firm, I started ApolloWorks Financial to serve clients as an independent advisor.
I spend most of my professional time educating employees on the benefits their employer is offering and helping them choose a health plan, disability coverage, and other options. This usually represents the second or third biggest portion of their financial decision-making each year. Astonishingly, this is often only a 30-minute consultation, and other than getting taxes done and paying monthly bills it might be the only time they are paying any mind to their finances. Anyone can see that this is not a winning formula for long-term financial fitness and well-being.
This obvious disconnect is why I am so passionate about working with people on the Financial Planning basics of Budgeting, Saving, and Protecting. After years of rewarding feedback from clients, it clearly cannot be said enough: just a little focus and intention to set financial goals and the strategies to meet them will yield great dividends.
